Yoga Introduction

Yoga has been around for a long time. Some say thousands of years. Over that time it has been influenced by many people and traditions. In North America it has become a very popular practice and for good reason. Yoga has much to offer.

The term yoga means union and with all the different types of yoga this definition remains true. The goal is to bring various parts of our being together into a union so that we can function at a higher level.

Warrior II

The most familiar type of yoga is Hatha Yoga which involves the various body poses. There are other types of yoga that could be categorized as subcategories of Hatha Yoga because they also involve body postures with some other element. Bikram Yoga and Hot Yoga are done in a very hot room which makes you sweat a lot. Vinyasa Yoga and Ashtanga Yoga focus on movements between the poses and integrate the breath with the movements. Iyengar Yoga puts extra focus on the exact alignment of the poses.

Downward Dog

They type of yoga one practices is simply a personal choice. Often it is just the first one they were introduced to. Some people will take part in a variety of classes. The most important thing to remember is that in the end yoga is a personal practice. It is a means to better understand and integrate yourself physically, mentally, and some say spiritually.

Physcial Exercise or Spiritual Practice?

Yoga comes from spiritual practice. The Hindu religion and the Buddist religion both develped Hatha yoga type classes as part of their practice. Hatha yoga was just one part of the religious practice though. Just by taking part in a yoga class doesn't make you a Hindu or a Buddhist. In North America the many yoga classes have been removed from the religious practice and it has become mostly a form of exercise. There are some yoga studios that do integrate religious or spiritual teachings into the class. We don't do that in our class. For us yoga is a form of exercise that does have a unique mental focus making it a type of moving meditation, which is much different than an aerobics class. The nature of the slow movements, attention to breathing, and the holding of poses also makes yoga a unique form of exercise that brings more attention to your whole being than does more traditional types of physical fitness. It is performed to soothing music which helps to calm the body and mind. Our yoga classes have an interesting blend of relaxation of strengthening.

Forward Bend

In our yoga class we don't follow a particular style. Dr. Dan has developed a practice that combines fluid movements connected to the breath with longer times in the poses to enhance awareness of how the poses should be held. Dr. Dan also brings his personal awareness of body mechanics from both his healing profession and his martial arts background. This allows him to assist people in adapting the yoga poses to their particular needs. Everyone can practice yoga at some level. Most people are surprized how quickly they improve in their ability with just a little practice each week.
